Alfred Newman Soundtracks & Film Scores

Alfred Newman was an American composer, conductor, and music director who ranks among the most important figures in the history of Hollywood film music and the patriarch of one of its great musical dynasties. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, he was a child-prodigy pianist and worked as a Broadway conductor before moving to Hollywood at the dawn of the sound era.

As head of the music department at 20th Century-Fox from 1940 to 1960, Newman shaped the studio's musical identity and mentored a generation of film composers. Across a career of some two hundred scores he won nine Academy Awards — long the record for a music director — from more than forty nominations, for films including Alexander's Ragtime Band, The Song of Bernadette, With a Song in My Heart, Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing, The King and I, and Camelot. His lush, string-centred romanticism helped define the sound of the classical Hollywood score, and he composed the fanfare still associated with the 20th Century-Fox logo.

Newman founded a musical family whose members — including his brothers Lionel and Emil, his sons David and Thomas, and his nephew Randy Newman — became significant film composers in their own right.
