Elliot Goldenthal is an American composer of film, concert, and theatre music, known for a bold, eclectic style that fuses tonal and atonal writing with electronic and world-music elements. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he studied at the Manhattan School of Music under Aaron Copland and John Corigliano, and his concert and stage work has run in parallel with his screen career throughout his life.
Goldenthal came to prominence with his darkly inventive score for Alien 3 (1992) and went on to score films across a wide range of genres, including Interview with the Vampire (1994), Heat (1995), Michael Collins (1996), and Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997). He won the Academy Award for Best Original Score for Frida (2002), for which he blended Mexican folk traditions with his orchestral voice.
A defining feature of his career is his long personal and professional partnership with director Julie Taymor, with whom he has collaborated on films such as Titus (1999), Frida, and Across the Universe (2007), as well as major stage works including the opera Grendel, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Music. Goldenthal is widely admired among film-music enthusiasts for his uncompromising, dramatically charged approach to scoring.
